Next-Stage Living: How Changing Our Mindset Will Help Us Age Better

Thanks to the advances of the 20th century, a significant number of older Americans are now living well into their 80s, 90s, or beyond. Yet our society is still built for people to retire in their 50s and 60s and die in their 60s and 70s. If we don’t fix this disconnect, our enormous gains in longevity will no longer be seen as a blessing but a curse.

Fortunately, we can do something about it: We can insist on a new narrative of aging that is focused on ‘Next-Stage Living’ instead of ‘End-Stage Living.’ An important part of this narrative is recognizing that independence is not something we surrender or graduate out of at a certain age; rather, it is core to our identity and sense of self. Another part is acknowledging that our attitudes and expectations about aging have a profound impact on how long — and how well — we live.
